Accommodation and Timings

There are several hotels nearby, as well as Leeds/Bradford Airport (should you wish to fly up). The nearest hotel is the Premier Leeds/Bradford Airport Hotel. As has happened at the previous Nationals and Internationals, attendees are expected to make their own accommodation arrangements.

We anticipate plenty of entries, though we will try to avoid pre-selection if at all possible. We estimate that on both Saturday and Sunday we will start at around 10:00 am and run through until around 5:30 pm.

We are anticipating having a Championships dinner on Saturday in a local restaurant, hopefully on the same basis as previously, i.e. we will need to know numbers beforehand, but you will be able to choose your meal on the night.

Note: There is no requirement for any entrant to be a RPS member

The NAVC stance on Artificial Intelligence (A))

It is an accepted convention that video, third party and archival images can be used in AV production so long as these do not dominate and that they add to the overall story.

The use of AI generated images is permitted, in moderation, and in the same way as third party or archival images. Any AI generated images, if used, should be produced under the direction and control of the AV producer.

Authors are, however,  free to manipulate images in any way they wish. This included the use of algorithmic processing in-camera or in post-processing software. e.g. for noise reduction , sharpening etc.

The use of AI generated voice-overs is permitted as this is considered the same as using any 3rd party voice.  Whilst authors may use AI techniques to assist in writing their scripts, the final version of the script should be the sole work of the author(s).

The organisers will trust in the integrity and honesty of NAVC entrants. The judges will, of course, form their own view on this.

The Judging Panel

Bryan Stubbs ARPS (Head Judge)

Bryan has been making AV sequences since 2004 but he has taking photographs as for as long as he can remember. He likes the storytelling aspect of AVs and most of his productions have a voice over. He has been greatly helped in developing his AV production skills by membership of the Leeds AV Group and he served as Hon Secretary for the group for many years.

Bryan has recently retired as RPS organiser of the Great Yorkshire  AV days, a role he undertook for 15 years, initially at Bradford Media Museum and then at Leeds Trinity University.

Bryan has been on many judging panels including the National AV Championships, the Great Northern AV Festival and the Peter Coles International AV Competition. He has  enjoyed some good success in national competitions. In judging a sequence  Bryan expects the photography and soundtrack to be technically good but he believes that an award winning AV is one with a gripping storyline that holds the audience’s attention throughout. Bryan is looking forward to seeing many such AVs.

Jeff Mansell CPAGB/AV

Jeff has been taking photographs for 60 years, starting with his dad's box Brownie camera. He saw his first AV in 1985 produced by a member of his camera club. He showed his first audio visual sequence there in 1986 and caught the bug! He continued to make them using slide/tape, and later digitally and had some success in regional competitions. Jeff joined Wilmslow Guild AV group in 1999, becoming a member of the committee in 2005.

Jeff enjoys AV productions with other people and has had some great success nationally. He gained his CPAGB/AV in 2015.

Jeff is an as experienced  judge in both local and national competitions. He enjoys making documentaries, so he will be looking for a compact script, with an expressive narration, the right choice of music, if used, good quality photography and a well structured production.

Jeff is looking forward to working with Bryan and Tony both of whom he has judged with before on separate occasions.

Tony Collinson LRPS DPAGB/AV

Tony has been involved in photography for many years and, along with an AV colleague, he has visited many camera clubs presenting slide shows using twin Kodak Carousel projectors, a Reel to Reel tape recorder and an Imatronic Dissolve Unit.

His interest in AV is to produce mainly documentary style AV’s, generally with subjects having some Christian association. He also enjoys producing video tutorials to support the AV fraternity and in particular, those having recently embarked on this great pastime.

Tony’s passion in photography is wildlife and he has visited many places in the UK in an attempt to capture images of scarce and rare birds.

Along with Bryan Stubbs, Tony is a recent recipient of the Dobson Henry Medal for his contribution to Audio Visual, a contribution which he continues as a judge of the NAVC.

NAVC Venue
The Championship will be held at Leeds Trinity University (LS18 5HD). This has a superb
lecture theatre with undoubtedly the most sophisticated projection and audio system you
will experience at any UK AV event in 2024. The huge screen, for example, is full cinema
specification, with tiny invisible perforations allowing the powerful, high-quality sound to
come directly from the screen itself. The projector is an equally high-specification
professional beast. The result? All sequences look and sound fabulous in this venue.
Leeds Trinity University is situated north-west of Leeds city centre, offering easy travel,
FREE parking, and a modern and comfortable auditorium with refreshment facilities.
